Dental Crown and Bridges

Crown and Bridges

There are many reasons a person can lose his/her teeth. Do you or your family member need the replacement of the missing teeth? There are various options you can go for such as dental crowns and dental bridges. These are two of the most suitable ways to fix your missing teeth.  Now let’s see what is a dental crown, and a dental bridge and what is the treatment process.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap, that dentists put over a tooth. Dental crowns can perfectly bring the tooth back to its normal size, shape, and function. Crowns can even improve the way your teeth look and it also increases the strength of teeth.

The reasons that will lead you toward a dental crown are as follow:

  • Large cavities
  • Cracked teeth
  • At the end of RCT
  • For discolored teeth
  • To fix crowded teeth

Following is the material this is used in the manufacture of dental crowns:

  • Ceramics
  • Metal alloys
  • Porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Composite resin

Remember that whatever the material the dentists will select for you, will likely blend in with the natural colour of your teeth.

What is a Dental Bridge?

When there are two or more dental crowns present on either side of the missing teeth it will be a dental bridge. A dental bridge covers missing teeth gaps and it has a false tooth (or teeth) present in between. These fake teeth are known as pontics, and the dental team can fabricate them with multiple materials such as alloys, porcelain, gold, or a mixture of them.

The purpose of a dental bridge is to bridge the gap occur by a missing tooth or teeth.

Different Types of Crowns and Bridges

There are four main kinds of dental crowns, it is mostly based on the type of material used.

  • Porcelain fused to metal is stronger than regular porcelain because of the metal structure.
  • Ceramic dental crowns are similar to the natural color of teeth.
  • Base metal alloys are incredibly resistant to corrosion and make very strong crowns.
  • Gold alloys have gold and copper that’s why it doesn’t fracture or wear away at the tooth itself.

Types of dental bridges

  • Traditional dental bridges use dental crowns on either side of the gap which holds the pontics (false teeth) in place.
  • Cantilever bridges have only one side of the pontic that has an abutment supporting it.
  • Maryland bridges possess a metal or porcelain framework that holds the pontic in place.
  • Implant-supported bridges use dental implants for support instead of crowns or frameworks.

You must be wondering about what to expect from your dental appointment. Let’s have a look at what the procedure will be for a dental crown or a dental bridge.

Procedure

The dentist will explain the complete procedure before starting it. After medical history, and complete oral examination the dentist will administer anesthesia. The dental team will take a dental impression or a custom temporary crown or bridge. Then, the dentist will reduce the height and width of the tooth or bridge abutment teeth.

After this step, the dentist will make sure to remove any decay. Once the crown cutting is complete then the dental expert will place a piece of cord in the gum pocket that looks like thick floss. The cord softly pushes the gum tissue away from the tooth, to get a good impression. Subsequently taking an impression, the dental team will send it to a dental lab for the fabrication of a crown/dental bridge.

Lastly, the dentist will remove the cord and place the temporary crown. You will have to wait for a few weeks to get your permanent crown or bridge.

The first step to getting your oral health back on the pathway is defining what treatment you may need. So, don’t wait and book your appointment right away, the dental team is always ready to help you get your beautiful smile back.
